An Introduction to Cross Stitch

Cross Stitch: A Timeless Craft for All

It is well documented that Black Sheep Wools has been around a long time, we started over 40 years ago selling yarn and accessories in shops around the North West of England. What you may not realise is that twenty years ago we actually sold more cross stitch than yarn! Cross Stitch was so popular and I am here to tell you that it is having another moment. Yes cross stitch sales are on the up!

If you’ve ever admired a framed sampler in a cosy cottage or felt the pull of a beautifully stitched alphabet or floral design, chances are you’ve been charmed by the art of cross stitch. At Black Sheep Wools, we’re passionate about all things needle and thread, and we think cross stitch is one of the most joyful, mindful crafts to try. If you are tempted to give it  a go then this blog post is perfect for you.

What is Cross Stitch?

Cross stitch is a form of counted thread embroidery, where tiny x-shaped stitches come together to create a picture or pattern. It’s worked on fabrics like aida or linen, which have a grid-like structure that makes it easy to count and space your stitches. Designs can range from sweet and simple motifs to elaborate works of art — and the beauty is, you can start small and grow your skills stitch by stitch.

Why We Love It

Cross stitch is wonderfully relaxing. It encourages you to slow down, focus, and enjoy the rhythmic repetition of stitching. It's a brilliant way to switch off from screens and stress, and it's incredibly satisfying to see your design emerge one cross at a time. Plus, it's one of the most accessible crafts to begin — no fancy equipment needed!

What Do I Need to Get Started?

To begin your cross stitch journey, you’ll need just a few essentials:

  • Aida Fabric: The most common fabric for beginners, available in different counts (we recommend 14-count to start).

  • Embroidery Thread: Usually stranded cotton, like DMC, in colours that match your pattern.

  • A Needle: A blunt-tipped tapestry needle (size 24 or 26) that won’t damage the weave of the fabric.

  • An Embroidery Hoop: Keeps your fabric taut while you stitch.

  • A Pattern: Choose something you love - whether it’s a modern quote, a woodland animal, or a floral wreath.

  • Small Scissors: For snipping thread ends neatly.

At Black Sheep Wools, we stock a wide range of cross stitch kits, so everything you need is in one handy package. Kits are a great starting point as they come with the fabric, threads, needle, and instructions - perfect for beginners.

Tips for Beginners

  • Start in the middle of your fabric and pattern to help centre your design.

  • Work with good lighting and take breaks often - cross stitch is gentle but can be tiring on the eyes.

  • Don’t worry about perfection - every stitcher was a beginner once, and those first wonky crosses are part of the journey.

  • Keep your threads organised - using a thread card or bobbins will save you lots of time and tangles.
