Merino Wool and Yarn
Merino wool is of extremely high value within the knitting industry. Made from the fleece of one of the world’s most ancient and toughest breed of sheep, the Merino sheep, it produces one of the finest and softest fabrics available. As Merino Sheep originally inhabited the extremes of New Zealand’s Southern Alps, their fleeces needed to adapt to adequately withstand the harsh weather, simply in order for them to survive. As a result, their fleece is breathable in summer and insulating in winter, yet exceptionally soft and lightweight throughout all seasons. Merino wool is above all prized for its soft and durable qualities.
Popular in Spain and North Africa since the 12th century, it is of no surprise that merino wool was originally extremely exclusive and was often worn mainly by royalty. It was so precious that, at one stage, the export of Merino sheep from Spain was seen as an extremely serious crime. It remained exclusive up until the 1960’s, when yarn manufacturers realised its potential within the knitting industry. Flock numbers increased and merino wool gradually became more attainable. Today, there are numerous types of fabulous merino wool to choose from, and we proudly stock the majority!
Merino yarn is wonderfully warm, 100% natural and super soft against the skin. This wool prevents overheating whilst simultaneously helping to pull moisture away from the skin. A lightweight fibre which is free from causing allergic reactions makes it a favourite for most knitters. Available in a range of both weights and textures, there is everything from traditional DK to intricately hand beaded versions. Lace merino wool is perfect for using when knitting or crocheting something such as a delicate shawl, whereas if you had a chunky sweater in mind, the hand-dyed merino wool featuring a mixture of beautiful colours would be absolutely perfect for use.
Any knitter or crocheter, regardless of their experience, will thoroughly enjoy working with this dream-like wool. It is springy, so getting the tension right is relatively easy and due to its softness this means that anything made with it will hang perfectly. It a yarn which wears well and is easy to care for. Some are hand wash only, but the majority can be machine washed at 30 or 40C.
This ultra-fine wool makes for the most glorious of knitted garments. Out of each and every type of knitting wool, it is a tried and true best that can be worn all year round.
