Wool Yarn

When asked to name their favourite fibre, most knitters choose wool yarn over silk, linen and many of the manmade fibres. This is not surprising simply because of the insulation and breathable qualities of wool. These qualities are further shown with the use of wool in military operations. The British army uniform in World War II, for example, was made of wool and came in shades of brown and brown green, with the colours chosen for camouflage.

Thanks to wool’s characteristic of absorbing up to 30% moisture, it retains its thermal qualities even when wet and keeps the wearer smelling sweet. The softening lanolin in wool is very gentle on baby skin and can be great for those with sensitive skin.

Some knitters are purists and like to knit with 100% wool. Debbie Bliss Blue Faced Leicester Aran is made only from British wool. This wool yarn comes in subtle tonal shades, like ecru, stone, duck egg, denim and vibrant burnt orange and red. British wool is used by many top fashion designers because of the quality and craftsmanship that goes into its manufacture. Vivienne Westwood, for example, has said in the past: “In these days when we’re threatened by encroaching climate change, wool is a very sustainable fabric. Luxury will be seen in the great traditional natural fibres.”

Debbie Bliss Donegal Luxury Tweed is 90% wool and 10% angora and is spun in Ireland, this wool yarn produces knitted garments which look and feel luxurious and expensive while being very cost-effective to knit.

To make life easier for knitters, here at Black Sheep Wools, we have several self striping wool yarns like Katia Azteca and Debbie Bliss Rialto DK print, which is made with 100% finest merino wool and is also self striping in fabulous shades like Pisa, Napoli, Roma, Verona and Ravenna.
