Nylon Yarn

The discovery of nylon by Wallace Carothers of the Du Pont Company in the 1930s is a spectacular success story. When stockings made from nylon yarn were first offered for sale on 15 May 1940 in New York City, four million pairs were sold in the first few hours. During the war, women were asked to hand back their nylon stockings as they were needed to manufacture parachutes for the war effort.

The original nylon yarn was called Nylon 6, 6 (the sixes refer to the number of carbon atoms in the monomer units). There are, however, many different types of nylon with all sorts of thickness and sheen quality which mimic the qualities of silk.

King Cole Romano Chunky contains 62% nylon yarn and is a fabulously luxurious blend of nylon and wool, which knits into a multi-tonal high fashion garment. Knitting makes people happy, the rhythmic process is therapeutic. Knitting can be about producing very functional garments but Rowan Kidsilk Haze Glamour is all about sparkle and shine, combining nylon yarn with silk, mohair and sequins, which can be crocheted or knitted into garments for evening wear.

Nylon yarn is often mixed with other materials to produce yarn which has strength, softness and lustre - nylon yarn can be as lustrous as silk. Katia Park Avenue is a nylon yarn combined with Kid Mohair, which can be used for crocheting or knitting and is available in shades of black and grey. Sirdar Wash and Wear Double Crepe DK is a machine washable nylon yarn which comes in a variety of shades, like cool pink, blush pink, bright pink and Hydrangea blue.

Here at Black Sheep Wools, we’re always adding new and innovative yarns to our collection, like Sirdar New Frizz, which combines 72% nylon yarn with ribbons, woven boucle and long eyelashes, to produce funky garments.
