Merino Wool and Yarn

Merino wool is made from the fleece of Merino sheep, which produce one of the finest and softest yarns available. This very fine wool has been popular in Spain and Northern Africa since the 12th century. For centuries, Merino wool was very exclusive, and was worn mainly by royalty. It was so precious that at one stage, the export of Merino sheep from Spain was seen as an extremely serious crime. It remained exclusive into the 20th century.

However, in the 1960s, yarn manufactures realised that many home knitters would enjoy working with this fantastic wool. They started to buy more, and flock numbers increased. As a result, Merino wool and yarn gradually became more widely available. Today, knitters have plenty of types to choose from.

Merino yarn is available in a range of weights and textures. You will find everything from traditional DK wool to hand beaded versions. Lace versions are light, making them perfect for knitting or crocheting an intricate shawl. However, for a chunky sweater, there are still plenty of options available – including hand-dyed versions which feature a mixture of colours.
