100% Cotton Yarn

Cotton is a wonderfully soft and fluffy type of natural fibre that is ideal for using when it comes to knitting or crocheting. The fibre is spun into a delightful yarn, resulting in a breathable textile that is absolutely perfect for evenings with a gentle cool breeze in both spring and summer.

The use of cotton dates back in prehistoric times, rather amazingly would you believe, to 5000BC! It is currently the most widely used material within the clothing industry and it is estimated that there is up to 25million tonnes used in world production annually. Cotton fibres produce the organic compound cellulose which pulls heat away from the body, an essential to consider when wearing during the warmer months. Cotton fibres occur naturally in white, brown, pink and green; however at Black Sheep Wools we stock a rather large variety of 100% Cotton yarns in stunning colours!

Knitters love using this wool due to it being washable, durable and extremely child-friendly! Whether you’re planning on creating your own accessories and clothing or even placemats and washcloths, 100% cotton yarns are extremely versatile and can produce fabulous results for any project.

When worked tight this cotton does not stretch and give, unlike some yarns, and this aspect allows for a rigidity which means sculptured patterns will hold their shape for a long period of time. 100% cotton yarns glide smoothly along the surface of any crochet hook or needle and are great for achieving a sense of fluidity when knitting at a fast rate, which can be quite difficult to attain when using synthetic yarns.

At Black Sheep Wools we are proud to present a glorious selection of 100% cotton yarns. Rico Creative Cotton Aran is most-liked due to it being available in numerous eye catching bursts of colour, whereas Rowan Cotton Glace has a beautiful sheen that looks fabulous when it comes to creating great stitch definition. At reasonable prices, it isn’t surprising if you struggle to choose an ultimate preference.  Fear not, with our matching patterns ready to hand, knitting possibilities are endless. Each and every one is a pleasure to work with! Yet, one thing to remember, is that cotton absorbs a considerable amount of water, so be careful in the rain!
