Despite Rowan knitting yarn only having been available since 1978, it is extremely popular. The firm was established by two Yorkshire men called Stephen Sheard and Simon Cockin. At the time, there were already a lot of yarns being produced in Yorkshire. However, the founders of Rowan saw that many of the yarns on the market at the time were pretty traditional and tame. They realised that many home knitters and craftspeople wanted more interesting and exciting yarns. Hobby weavers, crafters and modern knitters wanted yarns that allowed them to stretch themselves and create truly unique items. When the vibrant range of Rowan yarn became available, it was almost an instant hit.
Today, Rowan yarn still has a reputation for being different and interesting. Other yarn firms have followed the company into the alternative yarn market, but Rowan still leads the way. It is constantly coming up with new ideas and as a result, Rowan yarn is still very popular, especially with more experienced crafters and knitters.
Rowan has a policy of supporting the community and actively encouraging people to take up crafts like knitting. It runs a knitting club which has over 4,000 UK members and more than 8,000 international members. In 2007, it played a major role in the Age Concern charity event, Knit in Public Day. This charity event introduced thousands to the wonderful craft of knitting while raising funds for Age Concern.
Rowan knitting yarn combines the best of both worlds. The brand offers a good mix of traditional yarns, made from wool, cotton and mohair as well as innovative modern yarns made from man-made fibres like polyamide, polyester and nylon.
