The title of this piece may be a little misleading. You don’t actually need specific yarn to crochet, you can even crochet with plastic bags. However some yarn does crochet better than others. Mercerised cotton such as that by Sirdar is often used as it gives great stitch definition and a beautiful soft finish.
Your choice of yarn is often determined by what your project is. Crocheted ‘Granny Stripe’ blankets look fabulous in bright merino wool. Debbie Bliss’s Baby Cashmerino is perfect and there are lots of shades to choose from. If you fancy something you can throw in the washing machine how about using one of our classic baby yarns.
Have you ever envied someone’s beautiful crocheted beach bag. Rico’s Essential Cotton would be my yarn of choice for this. It is 100% pure cotton in a range of fabulous shades and hard wearing to boot.
Crocheted shawls look amazing when done in a fine lace yarn. Arucania’s Botany Lace is one my top five couldn’t live without yarns. It comes in fabulous colours and is lightweight enough for a summer shawl.
